MA Storytelling – Starts October 2020 – Full Time (1 Year) or Part-Time (3 Years)

This programme takes storytelling as an interdisciplinary,  creative practice, with the storytelling practitioner at its core. The focus is on Applied Storytelling, which is the use and application of storytelling within contexts of community-building, personal and professional development, and policy formation. It builds on our international reputation for research in Applied Storytelling relating to areas of Health, Environment, Education and Social Justice and offers students the opportunity to develop as storytelling practitioners and work alongside researchers on existing projects in the UK and overseas.

In the first semester you will study research methods, learn advanced skills in Digital Storytelling and have the opportunity to work on a placement on one of our live research projects. Alternatively you will also have the option of spending some time overseas studying at one of our partner institutions.

In the second semester you will design, deliver and evaluate an interdisciplinary community-based project, working collaboratively with other Masters students. You will also follow a module in storytelling theory and you will also have the opportunity to choose a module from another masters programme from within the School.

To complete the programme you will then undertake a major project under supervision, which may be practice-based or could be a traditional dissertation, but will reflect your own developing interests and priorities.

OUR NEW ONLINE POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN STORYTELLING BEGINS IN FEBRUARY 2021

We are delighted to announce that our new PGCert in Storytelling which will launch in early 2021 and we are now accepting applications for those wishing to start in either February (1^st cohort) or October (2^nd cohort). Those beginning in February 2021 will complete the programme in September 2021, and those beginning in October 2021 1ill complete in June 2022.

Like the MA Storytelling, the PG Certificate takes storytelling as a creative practice, with the storytelling practitioner at its core. It also focuses on Applied Storytelling – that is the use and application of storytelling within contexts of community-building, personal and professional development, and policy formation.

It builds on our international reputation for research in Applied Storytelling relating to areas of health, the environment, education and social justice and offers students the opportunity to develop as storytelling practitioners and work alongside researchers on existing projects in the UK and overseas.

The PG Certificate consists of a selection of modules from the MA programme, but now made available through online/remote delivery, making the PG Certificate ideal for students who, for whatever reason, may be unable to relocate to Loughborough at the present time, or to commit to full-time postgraduate study, but would value a postgraduate award as part of their continuing professional development, achieved through a part-time route.

Students who successfully complete the PG Certificate will be eligible to transfer onto the MA programme, if they so wish, and complete the additional credits to graduate with a master’s qualification.

The modules you will study are: Research Methods in Storytelling; Storytelling and the Digital; Developing Professional Practice; Thinking About Storytelling.

PhD study

We are also interested in receiving proposals for PhD study in any area relating to Storytelling. We are particularly interested in receiving proposals for projects that relate to our key priority areas in Applied Storytelling: Environment, Education, Health and Social Justice.

We do occasionally have fully-funded studentships available, often for specific projects, and these are usually advertised from November – January for a start in the following October. We are, though, always happy to receive proposals from prospective students who are self-funded or have secured funding from a different source.
