The AIR Network was a project that focused on Mukuru, one of Nairobi’s slums and the issue of air pollution. Proximity to industry, lack of sanitation, waste accumulation and domestic cooking practices all contribute to poor air quality in the slum, resulting in poor health outcomes. The project brought together a team of interdisciplinary researchers to work with slum residents to identify their experiences of living with poor air quality and the key issues that related to it. From this we worked with the community to create a series of arts projects designed to raise awareness of air quality issues within the community and to engage the community in the public conversation around possible ways forward to address the situation. We were involved in the original agenda-setting workshop in January 2018 and in supporting the digital storytelling work that emerged from it.
